The gap
Scanners read code. People press keys.
Most accessibility tools parse your HTML and report what they can detect in the markup. They never try to actually use the page.
Keyboard users meet a different set of problems: people with motor disabilities, screen-reader users, anyone with a broken trackpad. A menu that never receives focus, a pop-up that traps it, a focus ring nobody can see. None of this shows up in a markup scan.

We ran 95,524 keyboard traversals on US municipal websites and published every number with its method.
- 1,318official registry domains that do not resolve at all (11.3% of 11,663)
- 40.54%home pages with no “skip to content” link (2,901 of 7,156 that opened)
- 22.09%live sites running an overlay widget while barriers remain (1,581)
- 164,901critical violations across 133,165 US commercial organisations

Frequently asked questions
Is an overlay widget enough to be compliant?
No. An overlay changes how a page looks, not how its code behaves. We found overlays on 1,581 live municipal sites, and the keyboard barriers were still there. The fix has to be in the code.
How is AIfaFocus different from an automated scanner?
